William ‘Billy’ Humphrey, 65, of Mabel Street, died Saturday, March 21, 2026, at UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle. He was born on April 20, 1960, in New Castle, a son of the late William J. and Lillian (Petrilli) Humphrey. Billy married Karen M. (Kusinski) Humphrey on July 30, 1988, she survives at home. He was a civil engineer working for Frank B. Taylor Engineering for 38 years. Billy was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, where he was a Eucharist Minister, CCD teacher, and volunteered for many different events, and he loved to serve his community. Billy was a high school and collegiate athlete and is to be inducted into the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2026. ‘Coach Hump’ was also an assistant coach for New Castle football from 1997 until 2019, and basketball from 1997 to present, where he was a mentor to many young men. Coach Hump bled red and black and was a Hurricane through and through. Above all, he loved and was very devoted to God, his family, his friends, and the rest of the New Castle community at large.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by three sons, William A. Humphrey of New Castle, Anthony M. Humphrey and his wife Christina of Houston, TX, and James R. Humphrey and his fiancé Allyson Jamison of New Castle, one granddaughter, Lila Humphrey, two brothers, Thomas Humphrey and his wife Helen of Elon, NC and Richard ‘Ripper’ Humphrey of New Castle, one sister, Cecelia Yauger and her husband Michael of Grove City, two sisters-in-law, Jean Gaydos of Pittsburgh, PA and Diane Petraca and her husband David of Swissvale, PA, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Miles.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 1 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM, at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue. A Rosary service will be held at 5:30 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated will be celebrated Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:30 AM, at Holy Spirit Parish- St. Vitus Church. Father Aaron Kriss will officiate. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:00 AM.
